Kaneakua Friel Named to 2013 Mackey Award Watch List

Senior Tight End, Kaneakua Friel was named to the 2013 Mackey Award watch list.  The Mackey is awarded to the best Tight End in College Football.

It’s interesting to see Friel listed on so many watch lists for Tight Ends when you consider he wasn’t the clear cut starter at Tight End for BYU out of spring ball.  Friel and Brett Thompson (switched from WR) will be battling for the starting spot in Robert Anae’s new offensive attack.

Friel was a national Tight End of the week last season after his week one performance against Washington State on national television.

BYU has never had a player win the Mackey Award.  Dennis Pitta finished 2nd behind former Florida Gator, Aaron Hernandez, yes that Aaron Hernandez in 2009.
