The game is a lot faster in the NBA and Brandon Davies looks like he has the necessary tools to make it, even if the box score doesn’t say so.
Tonight Davies really impressed me with his ability to run an offense and move without the ball. Most of the time when he was on the floor, he was the only player that set off-ball screens and moved without the ball in his hands. He was really working hard to create shots for everyone else on the team.
A few good passes and a lot of effort on the boards helped Davies stand out on a floor with a lot of players just trying to ‘get theirs’ in hopes of making the NBA roster.
Davies defensive effort was fantastic, although, his lack of athleticism is exposed when guys try to stretch him out to the perimeter. He had a few blocking calls go against him, but not because he wasn’t in the right spot. Davies was trying to draw a charge, but the NBA circle is a little bigger than what he’s accustomed to and he was just inside. That will change.
Overall, I was impressed with Davies’ game tonight, but there is a lot of room for improvement. From his first game until tonight, however, I saw a significant amount of improvement and confidence for the young BYU product. I still think he’s got a shot to find a few minutes in Los Angeles this year.
Davies did show one flash of really good offense when he had a beautiful turnaround jumper over Robert Sacre late in the fourth quarter. He finished with 2 points and 3 rebounds.
