With BYU being an FBS Independent, there’s interesting news crossing the desk of the Lawless Republic all throughout the off-season. Scheduling news is always some of our favorite stuff to discuss. The Cougars added another quality opponent to their future schedules to give us more talk around the water cooler.
Fresno State a member of the Mountain West Conference and old WAC foe will play BYU in the 2015 and 2017 seasons. The first game of the season will take place in Provo on November 21, 2015. The next game will be November 4, 2017 in the Valley of Fresno.
The best news from this announcement was the fact that the games will take place in the month of November. The biggest hurdle facing BYU in future seasons as a football Independent is getting quality opponents at home in the month of November. Fresno and most recently Utah State are great additions to improving the home slate for the last month of the regular season.
Going forward, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for BYU to have a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West Conference. There is talks that the Pac-12 and BYU could form a future scheduling agreement similar to the one Notre Dame has with the ACC, but I just don’t see that being long-term. With the Mountain West, that could happen and round out home schedules in November. And with programs like Fresno State and Utah State, BYU has strong histories with those programs. Who doesn’t remember the battles with Jim Sweeney’s offensive attacks in the old WAC days? The Bulldogs had some very good teams, they even lead BYU in the overall series 5-4.
What’s your thoughts Cougar Nation on the addition of Fresno State to the future schedules?
