In a week where there is many games in College Football that have an impact on the National Championship chase, BYU vs. Wisconsin has been somewhat overlooked. It’s not being overlooked by BYU and the fans.
BYU has won only a handful number of games in a true road venue against a ranked opponent. This is a chance for BYU to be in the national discussion and turn some heads in a part of the country (Big Ten) that BYU doesn’t experience very often. To win this game BYU will have to do the following.
- Convert third downs
Bronco Mendenhall mentioned this in his weekly radio show as the main key to victory, and I would have to agree. BYU needs to pick up those tough 3rd & 7’s from their own side of the field if they have any chance of pulling the upset. Keep the chains moving and wear down this Wisconsin defense.
- Make Wisconsin earn everything
Think back to the Houston game. BYU is rolling and can’t be stopped offensively, yet Houston was up, despite being outplayed. Houston scored off a kick return, a pick six, and a deep pass play that had a questionable no-call offensive pass interference. If Wisconsin gets touchdowns like the Cougars of Houston did, BYU will get ran off the field. If Wisconsin is forced to go 75 yards every drive, BYU’s defense won’t allow many points against this run-heavy Badger attack.
- Believe you are the better team
I always remember in 2006 when former BYU Linebacker, Bryan Kehl said in a post-game interview after a loss to Boston College, that the team was “surprised” to be leading that game over a ranked, Matt Ryan-led Eagles squad. This BYU team is 6-2 and one of the hottest teams in College Football. BYU has defeated more ranked teams this season than the Badgers. BYU has been tested and beat good teams. They are ready for this, now it is time to deliver and act like they belong.
