BYU Receives At-Large NCAA Tournament Bid; Rematch with Oregon

Color me surprised.  I had BYU as an NIT team after this Selection Show was all said and done.  But the Cougars are headed to the big dance, and they avoided the First Four games in Dayton!  Shocking.

BYU received a 10-seed in the West Regional, and will face the Oregon Ducks in Milwaukee.  The Cougars of course already faced Oregon earlier this season.  BYU fell to Oregon in overtime, 100-96.  Oregon was #13 at the time and undefeated.  BYU led that game for 39 1/2 minutes until they let it slip away in overtime.

The NCAA Selection Committee rewarded teams who played difficult schedules outside of their conference.  BYU finished with the 3rd toughest S.O.S. in non-conference.  That was the difference.  Yes, BYU lost five games in West Coast Conference play, but the non-conference slate was loaded, and the Cougars were rewarded for that.

Last time BYU received a 10-seed was in 1992. The Cougars faced Shaquille O’Neal and the LSU Tigers.

Tip time is not yet known.  We will find that out later tonight as more details come in.

The Cougars are going dancing!!!!
