One of the national interviews that took place during BYU Football Media Day was head coach Bronco Mendenhall talking with Jim Rome on the Jim Rome Show.Rome has always been a fan of Mendenhall. Back in 2008, Rome spoke with Bronco after BYU defeated UCLA 59-0. Rome became fascinated with Mendenhall and his approach as a head football coach and every year Rome has made Bronco a regular on his show. Rack him! One of the questions from Rome to Mendenhall was: “Do the positives of independence outweigh the negatives?” Mendenhall’s response:
The positives do outweigh….for now. It’s a launch point. Only 14 teams have been seen more since we went independent, the last three years. We went independent primarily for exposure. Our ESPN exclusive partnership has given us a great advantage in terms of getting more difficult schedules. However, we need at some point to use independent as a launch point from and towards inclusion in terms of this break off that is financially driven.
