Football is almost here. You know how I know? It’s officially preseason watch list season. Today the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award was released. The Maxwell is voted on by sports writers and is given to the person that is the best overall player in college football.
This year, Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams joined the likes of Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley and Braxton Miller on the watchlist. Gotta admit, that’s pretty impressive company.
I don’t typically buy into preseason award lists. I think it’s impossible to predict who the standouts of the upcoming college football season are before anybody has even taken a snap, but it is quite an honor for our two BYU Cougars on the list to see the recognition that they are getting across the nation. Between the conference realignment talk, Bronco Mendenhall’s public cries for the Big 12 and the hype that Hill and Williams bring, it’s setting up to be a good season in Provo. This isn’t the first year in recent memory that offseason accolades have piled up and set BYU up for a great run, but fortunately for BYU fans, this year we’ll focus on the “Rise as One” and not a “Quest for Perfection.” Maybe that’s a good sign.
Also of note, Utah’s Dres Anderson and Utah State’s Chuckie Keeton were also named on the Maxwell watch list.
