Kyle Van Noy on Johnny Manziel: 'People have blown him out of proportion'

Former BYU star linebacker, Kyle Van Noy made his NFL debut yesterday for the Detroit Lions. The Lions took on the Cleveland Browns in their first pre-season game. The Browns of course had a notable debut as well on their hands in former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Johnny Manziel.

Van Noy who ended up with one pass deflection in the 13-12 win over Cleveland, had some interesting post-game remarks about the one they call, Johnny Football.

Is that the right thing to say after a game where Van Noy basically whiffed on tackling Manziel, not once, but twice? You could probably say Van Noy should have kept quiet. Lucky for Van Noy, no one is blinking around the NFL when he pops off to the media as a rookie.

Aside from the missed tackles on Johnny Football, KVN showed off those playmaking abilities that made him the special player he was at BYU. Van Noy created pressure in the backfield and he nearly forced a fumble during the second quarter. The fumble was ruled as an incomplete pass so Van Noy’s forced fumble was overturned. Here’s a clip from that play if you missed it.

Another takeaway from watching Van Noy in his first NFL action was his size. He is a different player physically than what he was at BYU. Van Noy is playing at 252 pounds. When KVN first came to Provo he was at 210 pounds.

It’ll be interesting to see if Van Noy ends up in the starting lineup at OLB for the Lions in their 4-3 scheme.

The Lions next pre-season game is on Friday, August 15th against the Oakland Raiders at 8 p.m. (MT).
