The BYU football team will be without starting quarterback Taysom Hill in the Poinsettia Bowl. The senior will require surgery on his left elbow.

BYU football defeated the Utah State Aggies last night 28-10 on senior night, but the victory came at a price.

Quarterback Taysom Hill injured his left elbow/arm and a source has told Lawless Republic that Hill will require surgery. His collegiate career is over.

In the fourth quarter, Hill scrambled and jumped. As he fell, he extended his arm to brace his fall and he fell hard and awkwardly on it.

Hill grabbed the arm immediately and made his way to the sidelines. Tanner Mangum would eventually throw a five-yard touchdown pass to Colby Pearson on the drive, but not before fumbling a snap.

After the game BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake said Hill had no fracture, but would undergo an MRI to assess the rest of the damage. The thinking last night was that Hill would be able to play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21, but now that’s not the case.

Hill had a tough senior campaign, but he was unquestionably one of the most athletic and explosive talents to ever suit up for BYU football. He was the Cougars’ unquestioned leader on and off the field, and his statistics are among some of BYU’s best.

Hill ends his career 5th in BYU career rushing, 5th in BYU career touchdowns and 11th in BYU career passing.

More from Lawless Republic

Hill completed 609-of-1,047 passes for 6,929 yards and 43 touchdowns (31 interceptions) in his career. He added 534 carries for 2,815 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Hill suffered season-ending injuries four times during his tenure in Provo – three times at the hands of Utah State. In 2012 Hill had to have surgery on his left knee on four-yard run that should have been a kneel down. Hill broke his left leg on a seemingly routine tackle on a scramble in 2014. In 2015 Hill suffered a Lisfranc injury in the season opener against Nebraska.

The BYU football team now hands the offense over to sophomore Tanner Mangum. Mangum played well in Hill’s absence last season, but a number of reports suggest he’s had some struggles grasping Ty Detmer‘s pro-style offense.

The Cougars will face a currently unknown Mountain West Conference opponent in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21.
