Former BYU football QB Steve Sarkisian going to the Atlanta Falcons

Former BYU football quarterback Steve Sarkisian‘s stay in Alabama was a short one. He’s now the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator.

BYU football fans will always remember Steve Sarkisian.

He quarterbacked one of the best teams in BYU football history and captured the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day 1997. He threw for 53 touchdowns during his two seasons in Provo and led BYU to a 21-5 record.

Sark’s had a number of issues to overcome – mainly alcoholism that cost him the head coaching job at USC – but he’s continuing to rebound.

He was the head coach at Washington from 2009-13 and went 34-29 with the Huskies. In 2014 he was hired by the Trojans. He went 9-4 in his first season, but was 3-2 before being let go in 2015. His USC tenure is a poorly-looked-upon one, with some coaches alleging he was drunk during games.

In September 2016, Sark was hired by Nick Saban to be an analyst for the Alabama Crimson Tide. In January he was promoted to offensive coordinator to replace Lane Kiffin. Fast forward four weeks and Sark is on his way to Atlanta to join the NFC Champion Falcons.

The Falcons lost offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers and are coming off the worst Super Bowl collapse in history.

Sark will have plenty of talent to work with, inheriting NFL MVP Matt Ryan and 1,000-yard rusher Devonta Freeman.

Sarkisian was last in the NFL in 2004, when he was the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders.
