BYU football held its spring scrimmage today. Here’s what we learned from our first look at the 2017 Cougars.

After about a month of practicing, the BYU football team took the field of LaVell Edwards Stadium for the spring scrimmage.

The Cougars did position drills, some 7-on-7 work, then an 11-on-11 scrimmage.

While the team has about five months before it will be practicing again, there were some elements of the day that might be telling about the 2017-18 season.

Here are three things we learned.

Matt Bushman might be a star for BYU football

Okay, okay, I know. It’s only been one scrimmage. Not only was it a scrimmage, but it looked like about 90 percent of the participants were never really into it. I don’t blame them. No one likes to play in the rain.

But boy, did Matt Bushman look awesome.

He scored three touchdowns on the day an extended the field from the tight end position (something that hasn’t been done since the Dennis Pitta days). At 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, Bushman has great size.

Between the skeleton drills and the team drills, Bushman caught six passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

Don’t forget, Bushman was ranked as the No. 14 tight end in the nation in 2014. He caught 63 passes for 1,583 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior in Arizona.

I expect him to push Moroni Laulu-Pututau going forward.
