Just after BYU football picked up WR Gunner Romney, another high school prospect gave a verbal commit to Kalani Sitake and the Cougars.

Talan Alfrey, a two-star safety from Auburn Mountainview High School (WA) has committed to BYU football.

Alfrey made the announcement Monday evening on his Twitter account.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound safety is listed as a two-star prospect according to 24/7Sports composite rankings.

At the time of his commitment, Alfrey was also receiving had offers from Air Force, Idaho and Nevada, while reportedly getting some interest from Utah and Boise State.

Alfrey is a mission-first kid, so he’ll be going on his LDS mission before beginning his BYU football career in 2020.

One of the great aspects about Alfrey is his athleticism. He also plays basketball and runs track, as well as playing multiple positions on the gridiron.

He amassed 1,853 total yards as a quarterback, runner and receiver – and racked up 61 total

tackles.

Alfrey is a good illustration of Sitake’s recruiting philosophy. Star rankings aren’t necessarily what the Cougars are looking at. Rather, Sitake and Co. wants to see athleticism.

Athletes make plays. This is especially true at the collegiate level. Coaching only gets you so far.

That’s one of the things that’s been so refreshing about Sitake and his staff – they’re the first to admit that everything comes from the players. Players make plays.

Obviously it will be a long while before Alfrey is suiting up for BYU football, but getting an athlete with his size is always a good thing – regardless of when he arrives on campus.
