Throwback Thursday: LaVell Edwards Coaching Tree
#6 – Ted Tollner Courtesy spokeo.com
Legendary coach Ted Tollner was hired at BYU in 1981 to coach Jim McMahon as quarterbacks coach for one season. Following his brief tenure at BYU, Tollner headed to southern California to be the offensive coordinator at USC under head coach John Robinson. After one season as the OC, Tollner became the head coach of the Trojans, leading USC to a PAC-10 championship and Rose Bowl victory over Ohio State in 1984. Tollner would later return to San Diego State as Head Coach where he was known for scheduling tough non-conference opponents. In 1998, he led the Aztecs to a 7-1 WAC conference record—their only loss would be a 13-0 shutout at BYU on a Thursday Night ESPN broadcast. He would get revenge on the Cougars two years later, defeating BYU in Provo by one point during LaVell Edward’s final season on a last second field goal. For the past several years, Tollner has served as the passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.
