Tourney Talk for BYU Men and Women’s Hoops

Since trailing San Diego 32-19 in the 1st Half of Thursday’s game, BYU has since outscored the Toreros 131-67.

What a different night it was on Saturday. After a 69-67 nail-biter, avoiding another catastrophic loss, the Cougars were in amazing shape in the Marriot Center against the same San Diego team, defeating them 91-33.

Despite the thrilling win, the team still has the ultimate “what-if?” scenario: if they had avoided the embarrassing defeat to Pacific at home, they would control their own destiny to win their first WCC title, either in the regular season or in the conference tourney. Now, they cling to the hope that they will be able to work some magic, finishing with wins against Portland and Gonzaga in the regular season, and probably win the WCC tourney.

It has been noted that BYU’s tourney odds are north of 50% if they were to find a way to win their last 2 regular season matchups, and make it to the WCC title. However, this team can’t leave it up to chance.

The offense has exploded over the past few games, giving a glimpse into what could be a dangerous March team. But, in order to get there, they need to AT WORST finish 5-1. It seems that the NIT is the most likely scenario, but this team faced similarly daunting odds last season, before being one of the Last Four In.

In other news, ESPN has BYU Women’s Basketball pegged as a 6-seed for the NCAA Tournament, and BYU Women’s Hoops is 2nd in “others receiving votes” in the AP Top 25 poll. If they were able to win both of the final games in the regular season (including at Gonzaga, who usually rules the league), it could mean a first-ever visit to the Top 25 for the Lady Cougars.
