International Play
If Bryant doesn’t earn an NBA contract and decides the G-League isn’t for him, he can head overseas to play.
Royce O’Neale went straight to Germany after graduating from Baylor. He played well enough there to earn an invite to join Golden State’s summer league team, but when that didn’t turn into an NBA contract, we went back overseas to Spain for another season.
Another solid year overseas brought another summer league contract, this time with the Jazz, and it turned into a spot in Utah.
Players have the opportunity to stand out in internationally and earn a shot at the NBA. Former BYU star Travis Hansen headed overseas after one year with the Atlanta Hawks. He became a star in Spain, and received multiple NBA offers, but chose to remain overseas.
After Brandon Davies was waived by the Brooklyn Nets in 2015, he headed overseas. He’s played in France, Italy, Monaco, and now in Lithuania. He’s excelled internationally, leading his Lithuanian team to the league championship recently, and earning LKL Finals MVP honors.
And let’s not forget Jimmer Fredette. After five NBA seasons and a stint in the G-League, he’s become a superstar in China. He’s looking use his overseas play to earn another shot in the NBA.
Bryant can succeed and get paid if he goes overseas. If he stands out, an NBA opportunity may come knocking. If not, he can enjoy a long and prosperous professional basketball career.
The options are there for him, it’s just a matter of what road he travels.
