Kalani Sitake and BYU football received a commitment from three-star safety Allan Mwata.

The BYU football family got bigger today.

Three-star safety Allan Mwata committed to BYU today. Mwata plays for Liberty High School in Henderson, Nevada.

Mwata made the announcement on his Twitter account earlier today, after committing at BYU football’s Fan Fest in Las Vegas.

Ed Lamb offered Mwata back in June 2016. At the time, it was Mwata’s first Division-I offer.

Mwata is Nevada’s top safety prospect, the 17th-best safety in the West, and the 75th-best safety in the nation (according to Scout).

Former BYU football star – and current NFL Draft prospect – Kai Nacua also prepped at Liberty High School.

According to Scout, Mwata has the potential to also play corner back at the next level. He’s got great speed and plays the ball well. You can check out some of Mwata’s highlights in the video below.

Regardless of how things work out for Mwata in Provo, one thing is absolutely clear: Lamb has put an extreme emphasis on recruiting in the defensive secondary. That’s a good thing too, because the tail-end of the Bronco Mendenhall era featured some not-too-stellar secondaries.

Also, somewhat obviously, having a secondary that can cover down the field is extremely important in the Cougars’ defensive scheme. A strong secondary can somewhat cover up a lack of pass rush (although it doesn’t look like BYU will have that problem this year).

Mwata also had interest in Florida Atlantic University. He stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs in at 180-pounds.
