By all accounts, Heaps was going to be the QB that helped BYU find its way back into National Championship consideration. Heaps was a 5-star recruit out of Washington that picked BYU over the likes of Washington, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Florida State and LSU. As a freshman, Heaps set passing records at BYU. However, as a sophomore the pressure mounted and Heaps began to struggle. A new offense and a new offensive coordinator proved to be a lot for Heaps to take on and he struggled mightily to start his sophomore season. Midway through the second half of a game against Utah State, Heaps was benched in favor of Riley Nelson. Heaps transferred to Kansas after it became apparent that he had lost the starting QB job for good.
