BYU Football Opponent Tracker: Week 7

facebooktwitterreddit

A one-stop article so you can check in and see how BYU 2014 opponents fared in last week’s action. Keep up-to-date to see exactly how strong BYU football’s 2014 strength of schedule is.

UConn (1-5) – 3-12 Loss at Tulane

When Bob Diaco left Notre Dame’s Defensive Coordinator to head to Hartford and become the Huskies’ head coach, this was not the start that he had in mine. UConn will have their hands full in a couple of weeks after their bye when they travel to East Carolina.

Texas (2-4) – 26-31 vs. Oklahoma

The Longhorns kept it closer than many expected, but ultimately they fell to 2-4. Texas still has TCU, Oklahoma State and Kansas State left on their schedule. Making a bowl will be an accomplishment in Austin this year.

Houston (3-3) –28-24 at Memphis

Memphis is a better team than their record and their name would indicate, but they’re still not a powerhouse. Nonetheless, Houston was able to go on the road and beat the Tigers. I don’t see another loss on Houston’s schedule until December when they take on Cincinnati.

Virginia (4-2) – BYE

Virginia will travel to Dukme next week for their first ACC road test of the season. Duke is coming off a big upset win over Georgia Tech. The ACC isn’t the SEC, but they are proving to be a solid conference.

Utah State (4-2) – 34-16 win vs. Air Force

Air Foce punched Boise State in the mouth a few weeks ago but they went to Logan and got slapped. The Vigil brothers dominated and Darrel Garretson is making a strong case for the Aggies’ starting quarterback position next year when Chuckie Keeton comes back.

UCF (3-2) – 31-24 win vs. BYU

We all watched how this one played out. It was disappointing. UCF didn’t look like a dominant team, but they definitely have some weapons. It will be interesting to see how the rest of their season plays out.

Nevada (3-3) – 31-24 loss vs. Colorado State

More from BYU Football

The Wolfpack have a good team out there in Reno, but there isn’t a better time for BYU to face them than this week. Nevada has lost three of their last four games and two in a row. They lose to Boise State by five points and to Colorado State by just a touchdown. This game in Provo is going to be close.

Boise State (4-2) – BYE

Boise has a tune up game against Mountain West Conference foe Fresno State next week. Keep an eye on that game, Cougar fans.

Middle Tennessee State (4-3) – 24-49 loss at Marshall

Middle Tennessee lost to a very good Marshall team. The Blue Raiders are never going to be a powerhouse team, but as long as they get to bowl eligibility than I don’t think BYU fans can ask for anything else.

UNLV (2-5) – 30-27 win vs. Fresno State

The Rebels upset the Bulldogs of Fresno State in overtime this week. I think that may be the last win that they see this season. They are not a good football team but they were able to put it together against Fresno State. The Rebels travel to Logan in two weeks to take on a Utah State team that is rolling.

Savannah State (0-6) – 12-24 loss at Florida A&M

Savannah State lose to a previously winless Florida A&M team. They may give up 50 points against Bethune-Cookman next week.

California (4-2) – 7-31 loss vs. Washington

In true Cal fashion, they took the momentum they’ve had in recent weeks and threw it away. They were simply dominated by Washington. This Cal team is much better than people expected, but their schedule is going to pick up in the next few weeks. Their game against BYU on Senior Night may be a game they must win to reach bowl eligibility.

Regardless of the strength of BYU’s schedule, we know they are headed to the Miami Beach Bowl. Still, it’s worth keeping tabs of this schedule and to remorse on what could have been.

Overall opponent’s record year to date: 34-39
