National Signing Day is less than two weeks away and BYU is still in the running for a number of different prospects. One of those potential Cougars goes by the name Britain Covey and is known around the state of Utah for being one of the exciting high school football players the state has ever seen. Today we’ll take a more in depth look at Covey’s recruitment and BYU’s chances to land the Timpview product.

First things first, Britain Covey is a winner. Covey played at Timpview High School in Provo and won his third consecutive state championship in 2014. Timpview dominated the competition in Utah and showed well against other schools as they traveled a little around the Western United State. Covey was a monumental part of that. He won the 2014 Mr. Football award in the state of Utah and managed to put together one of the most impressive highlight videos that you will ever see.
Covey is just 5’9″ tall and 170 lbs. If you saw him walking down the street you would never except that he is a very talented quarterback with scholarship offers from each of the three main in-state schools. He primarily played quarterback at Timpview but he also could line up as a running back out of the backfield or a wide receiver. Unfortunately, his size will prohibit him from playing quarterback at the next level but that doesn’t mean he won’t be able to make an impact. He will likely play slot receiver and could return punts or kicks as well.
He’s had family members that have played at BYU in the past and is very familiar with the program. He’s visited Utah multiple times and reportedly has a very good relationship with the Utah State coaching staff as well. Frankly, it’s going to be a dog fight this last week and a half to see who will be able to win the battle for Covey. Utah has long been considered the favorite to land Covey but the recent coaching changes in Salt Lake City could change his mind. Personally, I think he fits best in Utah State or BYU’s offenses. He could watch the Aggies’ JoJo Natson as an example of how they would use his talents in Logan and he could check out film of JD Falslev or Garret Juergens to see how he would likely be used in Provo.
Where Does BYU Stand?
Covey visited Utah State last week, will visit Utah this weekend and is scheduled to visit BYU next weekend. At this point, however, the official visits are formalities. He’s very well familiar with each school and knows what each of them have to offer. All that there is left to do now is simply decide where he fits best.
There are a couple of different factors that BYU has going for them. Isaiah Nacua (class of 2014 and will be on the team in 2015) and Devin Kaufusi (2015 commit) are known to be good freinds with Covey. Gabe Reid, who also has a BYU offer, is scheduled to visit Provo the same weekend as Covey. Stanford is the favorite to land Reid’s talents but it is possible that he and Covey decide to reunite with their old Timpview teammates and play for the same school as their fathers.
Covey really is a guess at this point. You could make a pretty convincing argument for each school that has offered him.
Prediction
For a long time it seemed like this would come down to Utah and everyone else but now that Signing Day is close, it’s up in the air. He’ll make a decision after all of his official visits. Covey will be a sign and send player for whichever school wins his services as he is set to serve an LDS mission after graduation.
My signing day prediction: Utah State.
Ultimately, I think that Reid goes to Stanford and Covey decides that he wants to go to Utah State to be the next JoJo Natson. I think he would be dynamic at BYU. His highlights are not flukes and even though it looks like he’s playing against children, he’s not. He’s really that good.
