BYU’s Football Staff Takes Shape

BYU’s football staff is beginning to take shape. After the announcements of Ilaisa Tuiaki as Defensive Coordinator, Ty Detmer as Offensive Coordinator, and Ed Lamb as Assistant Head Coach, several position coaches have been announced by Sitake and the BYU Football Program.

  • The team will keep Steve Kaufusi as Defensive Line coach, one of the few coaches who didn’t leave with Bronco Mendenhall to go to UVA. He has coached the Defensive Line at BYU since 2002, and before that was on the Defensive Staff at the University of Utah. Kaufusi has consistently had top notch D-lines, and will be a great assistant for Sitake and Tuiaki.
  • Nu’u Tafisi is the new head Strength&Conditioning coach. Tafisi has a strong background with winning teams, having been on the Strength and Conditioning Staffs of Boise State, Utah, and USC this last season. He played Defensive End at Cal, and spent a couple seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
  • Sitake also announced that Mike Empey would return to the team as Offensive Line coach. Empey played at BYU with Ty Detmer, and also coached Tight Ends under Gary Crowton. He has spent the last couple of seasons at American Fork High School as Offensive Coordinator.
  • Ben Cahoon was rehired today as Wide Receivers Coach at BYU. He had a great career in the CFL, and was previously WR Coach at BYU before being released. One great thing about Cahoon was how much top recruit Jonah Trinnaman (Snow College 4-star Receiver) liked Cahoon. It has been reported that Trinnaman is thrilled about the hire for the Cougs.

What are your thoughts on the staff that BYU has assembled, and what would you like them to do with the remaining openings?
