BYU baseball is back to .500 through six games. Third baseman Nate Favero is a big reason why.

BYU baseball is 3-3 on the season heading into today’s game with San Jose State. The Cougars’ three losses have come by four total runs and two have come in extra innings.

BYU is playing well, and the Cougars best player through this stretch has been junior infielder Nate Favero.

He played in 42 games last season, starting 27 of them. He hit three homers, drove in 16 runs and hit .317.

Favero has carried that momentum into 2017. He’s played in all six games, starting in four of them. He’s already got one home run and six RBIs, and is hitting a whopping .400. Favero is leading the team in runs batted in and in batting average. He’s second on the team in slugging percentage (.700), doubles (three), runs scored (four), walks (three) and on-base percentage (.458).

In short, he’s well on his way to one heck of a 2017 campaign.

With Kyle Dean, Colton Shaver and Brennon Anderson struggling at the plate, Favero playing well is a big deal for BYU baseball.

BYU head coach Mike Littlewood said in a press release that the Cougars “got a couple guys pressing at the plate” at the moment, and he’s not wrong. The middle of the lineup is slumping a bit. Favero is shouldering a huge portion of that load right now.

The Cougars have a solid pitching rotation, but it doesn’t seem like it’s anything to write home about. If BYU baseball is going to win the West Coast Conference, then the Cougars will have to swing hot bats all season.

BYU baseball will play a three-game series against CSU Bakersfield from March 2-4 and a four-game series with UC Santa Barbara from March 9-11.
