BYU basketball: Cougars earn top WCC awards
The West Coast Conference revealed its award recipients, and BYU basketball was well represented, with a number of Cougars getting recognized.
BYU basketball had a number of players recognized by the West Coast Conference for their contributions on (and off) the basketball court.
While the BYU basketball season may have been an up-and-down ride, there’s no denying these players were deserving of the accolades.
Also, just a note, these awards were selected based off WCC play only.
Eric Mika and TJ Haws were selected to the All-WCC First Team. Haws and Yoeli Childs earned All-WCC Freshman Team accolades.
The Cougars have had two players on the All-WCC First Team since joining the conference in 2011.
Mika finished WCC play averaging 20 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He led the conference in blocks and rebounding, was second in scoring, and was in the top 15 in field goal and free-throw percentage.
Haws is the first freshman to earn all-conference first team honors since Danny Ainge in 1977-78. Haws averaged 14.9 points and 3.2 assists in conference play. He also led BYU basketball with 44 3-pointers on 42 percent shooting. He finished in the top 10 in 3-pointers per game, scoring, free-throw percentage, 3-point percentage and assists.
Next: BYU football's best wins of the 2000s
Childs averaged 10 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game during league playou, in what was really his coming out party. He had two double-doubles and five games with 10 or more boards. Childs exploded for 23 points and 17 rebounds against San Francisco.
BYU basketball finished with the No. 3 seed in the West Coast Conference, and will attempt to win the WCC tourney to get to the big dance. The Cougars’ first opponent is Loyola Marymount University. BYU went 2-0 against LMU this season.
The game tips off Saturday at 2 pm MST from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
