BYU basketball got wrecked last night and that’s sad. So start your day off right by watching the best postseason moment in Cougar history.

In 1981, BYU basketball was facing off with Notre Dame in the East Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 6 seed Cougars had knocked off Princeton and UCLA to get to the Irish.

BYU basketball and Notre Dame traded blows all night long, and the game came down to the final seconds – just like so many other games in March tend to do. With eight seconds remaining, BYU trailed 50-49.

The Cougars got the ball to Danny Ainge off the inbound and Ainge went coast-to-coast in about six seconds, laying the ball up over Notre Dame’s Orlando Woolridge. The Irish air-mailed their final shot attempt and BYU advanced to its first – and only – Elite Eight appearance.

As documented by the Deseret News, Ainge famously told teammate Steve Trumbo: “Don’t worry about it. Just get the ball to me.”

What a boss.

Ainge scored 12 points in the victory, shooting 40 percent from the field and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Fred Roberts added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Steve Craig and Greg Ballif combining to add 20.

Woolridge led Notre Dame with 17 points. Kelly Tripucka added 14. Tracy Jackson chipped in 11.

BYU was trailing by 10 at the half against the Irish, but Ainge and the Cougars outscored Notre Dame 33-22 in the second half.

The Cougars fell to No. 1 seed Virginia in the next round. The Cavaliers would go on to defeat LSU in the third place game.
