The pass rush

If there was one area where the BYU defense was lacking last season, it was the pass rush. The Cougars averaged two sacks per game (60th in the nation) and often struggled to get a rush when they truly needed it.

The coverage was typically tight, and the linebackers are some of the best the program has ever had. So those parts will be fine. But, it will be interesting to check out the trench warfare.

Tevita Mo’unga, Kesni Tausinga, Merrill Taliauli, Corbin Kaufusi, Handsome Tanielu and Moses Kaumatule will all factor in to the defensive line rotation when the season begins.

The Cougars have some huge bodies in the middle of the defensive line – now they’ll need to rotate edge rushers to get consistent pressure.

One possibility for the Cougars might be to send Fred Warner on more blitzes. That may happen, but it seems they’d prefer having him in coverage.
