BYU football won’t be back for awhile, but there’s a whole summer of analysis and speculation looming for Cougar fans. It’s never too early to start.

All four of BYU football’s captains from a year ago are eyeing the NFL. Jamaal Williams, Taysom Hill, Kai Nacua and Harvey Langi all participated at BYU’s Pro Day and each bring unique skills to the table.

But, their absences mean the Cougars will have four new captains this season.

Who might get the nod?

It’s still early, but if spring ball is any indication on BYU’s leaders, then these four will likely be the Cougar captains in 2017-18.

Tanner Mangum, junior quarterback

Most teams like to have their signal caller as a captain. In fact, it becomes slightly odd when the team’s QB isn’t one (like Connor Cook at Michigan State). So it makes plenty of sense for Mangum to be one.

Besides being BYU football’s offensive leader, Mangum is great with the media, is well-spoken, and has arguably already been through the most frustrating part of his college career (taking a backup role and being asked constantly about his relationship with Hill).

Mangum has a full grasp of Ty Detmer‘s offense now, and he certainly appeared to be one of the more vocal leaders throughout spring ball.
