The 2006 Holy War game between Utah and BYU football spawned one of the greatest moments in Cougar history. Start your day with it.

2006 was a great year for BYU football. The Cougars went 11-2 en route to a 38-8 shellacking of Oregon in the Pioneer Purevision Las Vegas Bowl.

The Cougars’ two losses came by a combined 10 points, dropping games to Arizona and No. 23 Boston College.

On November 25, No. 21 BYU football went north to Salt Lake City for a showdown with the Utah Utes. The Utes were 7-4 at that point (they’d go on to finish 8-5 and pick up a win in the Armed Forces Bowl).

Just like so many Holy Wars before it, the game went down to the wire. The Utes scored with 1:19 remaining, taking a 31-27 lead. Things seemed bleak for the Cougars, but the senior leadership of quarterback John Beck and tight end Jonny Harline proved to be too much.

Beck finished the game completing 28-of-43 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Harline nabbed seven catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns.

Late in the game, Beck connected with Harline on a fourth-and-four. A handful of plays later, the duo connected on one of the most iconic plays in BYU football history.

With three seconds left on the clock, Beck took the snap on the Utah 12-yard line. He scrambled for what felt like an eternity before finding a wide open Harline on the opposite side of the field.

For now, BYU football continues offseason workouts in preparation for the 2017-18 season. Lawless Republic will continue to cover the Cougars throughout the offseason.
