BYU football: Determining the All-2000s Cougar squad
Running Back: Luke Staley
Years Active: 1999-01
Career Stats: 2,493 rushing yards; 41 rushing TDs; 1,000 receiving yards; 7 receiving TDs
This one was very difficult to select. BYU football has had some great ball carriers over the last 17 seasons. But, I had to go with Staley.
Staley is the only Doak Walker Award winner in the history of BYU football. He didn’t finish the 2001 season due to injury, but he still scored 24 touchdowns. In some ways, Staley suffers from the “bust” label. Fans tend to remember him as a good player that left early. But truly, Staley might be the most dynamic runner in Cougar history. Every time he touched the ball, the potential for something special was there.
Other considerations: Curtis Brown, Harvey Unga, Jamaal Williams
