Dave Rose and BYU basketball received a commitment from a talented Idaho guard yesterday.

BYU basketball will have at least one new face on the roster next season, as Rylan Bergersen is the newest Cougar.

Bergersen is a graduate from Borah High School (ID) and spent last season with Link Prep (MO). He wanted to make sure he was getting on the radar of schools around the nation, so he bolted out of Idaho.

He’s a 6-foot-6, 200-pound guard that comes from a basketball family.

His father, Roberto, played at Boise State and was one of the best players in the Broncos’ program history. He was a Big West Player of the Year and was the Atlanta Hawks’ second-round selection in the 1999 NBA Draft.

In addition to his offer from BYU basketball, Bergersen held an offer from the University of Hawaii. He visited BYU in early April, in addition to trips to Hawaii and LSU.

On what he thinks he will bring to BYU, Bergersen told the Deseret News:

“They say they love my versatility and like how I can knock down open shots and play well across the board. I think I have a good basketball IQ and can shoot the ball pretty well, can score the ball pretty well, but I also think I can do a little bit of everything for them.”

Bergersen averaged 15.5 points per game as a senior at Borah High School. He shot 41 percent from 3-point range.

He looks like a good shooter – which is something the Cougars needed. Defensively, there’s not much information on him.

Expect more changes to come for BYU basketball. Lawless Republic will continue to follow the program throughout the offseason.
