We always remember what the BYU football team does on the field. But, we don’t always remember the things that were said.

Actions speak louder than words. But, sometimes, words speak pretty loud themselves. Especially when it comes to BYU football.

The Cougars are a polarizing team. People tend to either love them or hate them.

Add that to their national relevancy, and BYU football has been the subject of some interesting thoughts, comments and rants.

Let’s stroll down memory lane to review some of the very best.

Ron McBride on the location of BYU

“When Brigham Young came into the valley, he pointed to where the University of Utah would be and said, ‘This is the place.’ Provo was just an afterthought.”

BYU and Utah are just an hour or so apart from each other. Proximity has always been a huge part of the Holy War rivalry – especially in recruiting. While McBride may think Provo is an afterthought, BYU football certainly is not.

Lenny Gomes ‘pump my gas’

“Typical Utah bullsh*t. All those (Utes) think that’s all there is to life. But when I’m making $50-60,000 a year, they’ll be pumping my gas. They’re just low-class losers.”

Gomes said this after the Utes knocked off BYU football in Provo in 1993. At the time it was just Utah’s third win over the Cougars in the last 20 years. Some Utah fans and players began pulling at the goal posts in Cougar Stadium, leading to Gomes’ outburst.
