Start your day with BYU football: Cougars beat No. 3 Oklahoma
In 2009, BYU football picked up the biggest win of the Bronco Mendenhall era. In the new Cowboys Stadium, BYU knocked off the Sooners.
BYU football defeated No. 3 Oklahoma in Jerry World.
It’s been nearly a decade, but sometimes it still doesn’t seem real. Seems like a dream.
But rest assured, it was real. BYU football stunned the Sooners 14-13.
Max Hall completed 26-of-38 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns (and two picks). McKay Jacobson hauled in four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown and Dennis Pitta caught seven balls for 90 yards.
Looking back at the roster, Oklahoma was incredibly talented. The Sooners returned a Heisman Trophy winner (Sam Bradford), three All-Americans and four All-Big 12 players from the team that made a National Championship game appearance the year earlier.
Bradford, DeMarco Murray and Ryan Broyles were all key Sooners – all would (obviously) go on to have various levels of success in the NFL.

Broyles hauled in a touchdown pass with 4:56 left in the first quarter, giving Oklahoma a 7-0 lead. BYU football answered with a Hall to Andrew George touchdown, tying the game a 7-7 with 1:25 left. Oklahoma kicked a field goal just before halftime, entering the locker room with a 10-7 lead.
The third quarter went scoreless, and the Sooners hit another field goal with 11:47 left in the fourth. The two teams would battle back and forth for the rest of the quarter before Hall connected with Jacobson on seven-yard touchdown pass with about three minutes left.
It was BYU football’s first win over a ranked non-conference opponent since the 1997 Cotton Bowl and the Cougars’ first win over a top 10 non-conference foe since the 1990 victory over Miami in Provo.
The win also improved BYU to 2-0 against Oklahoma all-time.
