The BYU volleyball team fell in disappointing fashion to Hawaii last night in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.

Much like BYU basketball, BYU volleyball went out of the conference tournament with a fizzle, not a bang.

The Cougars were swept 3-0 by the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors last night.

“Congrats to Hawaii for advancing,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said in a press release. “They put a bunch of pressure on us from the service line. We just couldn’t get our team in system. Our hitters had to battle through that. They made good touches defensively and were in good spots. I think it started from the pressure of them serving. Hawaii deserves to advance and get another chance to play.”

Jake Langlois, Ben Patch and Brenden Sander combined for 40 kills on the night. Leo Durkin led the team with 40 assists. Erik Sikes had seven digs.

The Cougars and Rainbow Warriors kept things close throughout the night. BYU volleyball fell 25-22 in set one, 25-23 in set two and 25-22 in set three. They just couldn’t get over the hump.

BYU volleyball now must hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA men’s volleyball selection show airs on Sunday, April 23 at 11AM MDT.

If BYU volleyball has played its final match this season (which is extremely unlikely), then the Cougars finish at 24-4 on the season.

The Cougars protected the Smith Fieldhouse, earning 16 wins in 18 games in Provo. They also went on a run early January until late March where they won 20 of 21 games.
