20. Cusick last second putback vs Utah State (2012)

Sometimes, it’s more than a game.

Craig Cusick, stalwart backup point guard for the Cougars, was not having his best game. He was 0-6 from the field in a close one with Utah State. Every time the Cougars pulled away, the Aggies had an answer. It was tight, low-scoring, and back-and-forth.

With his backcourt mate Matt Carlino not doing well either, and a short bench for the guard line, Cusick was seeing a lot of minutes on the floor. But he struggled. He looked frustrated, off. He was having trouble keeping his head in the game.

He’d just found out his father had been diagnosed with cancer.

But he came to play. And frankly, the Cougars need him on the floor. They needed the ball security, and that’s what Craig provided in his two years with BYU basketball after transferring from Salt Lake Community College.

So he was on the floor with the game tied the final seconds ticking. The Cougars drew up a play to stave off overtime. But Carlino’s would-be game winning shot caromed off the front of the rim, and there wasn’t enough time for another possession.

In one smooth motion—leaping up, catching, shooting—Cusick put the Cougars up by 2 with 0.2 seconds remaining.

Watch his celebration at the end. The way his teammates crowd around him, the emotion. Yes, it was a tight game against a rival won on a last second shot, but you could tell:

To this team, it was a whole lot more.
