Pitta: One of BYU’s all-time best tight ends

Pitta began at BYU in 2004 and led all tight ends with 17 catches.

After serving an LDS mission in the Dominican Republic, Pitta returned in 2007.

He was named to the All-Mountain West Conference First Team after gaining 813 yards off of 59 receptions in 13 games.

In his junior year, Pitta set career bests with 12 receptions at Colorado State and 213 yards against Northern Iowa.

He also set the BYU record for receptions by a tight end with 83 receptions in 2008.

Pitta’s senior season came in 2009 when BYU went 10-2 with three top 25 wins.

The highlight of the season came in week one when No. 20 BYU upset No. 3 Oklahoma 14-13 at Cowboys’ Stadium in Texas.

Pitta had seven receptions for 90 yards in the victory.

At the end of the season, BYU finished ranked No. 12 nationally and Pitta was named to 10 different All-American teams.

Pitta finished his time at BYU with 2,901 yards, which set BYU and NCAA records for reception yards by a tight end.

Pitta’s NFL career may have been cut short due to injury, but the legacy he left behind for BYU tight ends will live on.
