BYU basketball has now finalized its roster after an offseason filled with moves. McKay Cannon is the newest Cougar.

BYU basketball head coach Dave Rose announced the addition of McKay Cannon on Monday night.

Cannon is a walk-on who spent the last two seasons at Weber State.

He was a starter on the 2015-16 Wildcats team that won the Big Sky regular season and tourney titles en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. That season he averaged 5.5 points, 2.7 assists and two rebounds per game. He played in 35 games, starting 33 of them.

Cannon did not start for Weber State much last year (seven), but did play in 32 games. He averaged 2.6 points, 1.5 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game.

Cannon is a career 38 percent shooter from the field, and 36 percent shoot from beyond the arc. He scored a career-high 14 points against Drake on Nov. 24, 2015, going 4-for-6 from deep.

He’s listed at 6-foot, 185-pounds and is Shelley High School’s (ID) all-time leading scorer with 1,410 points. Cannon will have to sit out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will then have two seasons of eligibility left.

Barring something unexpected, Cannon’s role with BYU basketball will be an end-of-the-bench one. He’s not great at any one thing, but he’s a guard that has shown the ability to knock down 3-point shots. But it seems unlikely that he becomes a consistent rotation player for Dave Rose and BYU basketball.

Granted, I said those kind of things about Skyler Halford too, and we all know how that turned out. Hopefully Cannon settles in that nicely as well.

According to BYU basketball’s official roster page, Cannon will wear jersey No. 24, which was most recently worn by Davin Guinn.
