BYU football has a (slim) chance at making some serious noise early on. A win over LSU would be massive… but would it be the best win ever?

BYU football’s first game is against lowly Portland State in Provo. The following week, things get real. Quick.

The Cougars will head to NRG Stadium in Houston to clash with the LSU Tigers.

LSU is projected by nearly every credible college football source to finish somewhere around No. 10 in the nation. There are questions surrounding the Tigers’ offense, but they still feature Heisman Trophy candidate Derrius Guice and one heck of an offensive line.

Plus, LSU’s defense will, once again, be one of the very best in the nation. Here’s some of the predicted finishes for LSU:

Athlon Sports: No. 11

Sporting News: No. 14

Bleacher Report: No. 6

Fox Sports: No. 20

Sports Illustrated: No. 11

Yahoo Sports: No. 10

All of these companies acknowledge that these rankings are all subject to (and likely will) change by the time late August rolls around. Still, the Tigers are an incredibly talented team.

So would a victory over LSU be the best win of all time for BYU football?

Well, as it stands, most everyone agrees that BYU football’s best wins are (in no particular order) are against Miami (1990), Michigan (1984), Pittsburgh (1984), Oklahoma (2009) and Kansas State (1997).

In terms of talent, LSU – in my estimation – is right there with 1990 Miami and 2009 Oklahoma. The Tigers will have multiple players drafted after their season ends, regardless of where they finish in the SEC or Top 25.

To fully judge where a win over LSU stands in the pantheon of BYU football wins, two things need to happen. First, the Cougars actually need to win. Second, we need to see where LSU stands at season’s end.

Still, being a near two touchdown underdog means that escaping with a victory would be a historic night.

We’ll see how it shakes out, just realize there’s the potential for BYU football to make some history in Houston.
