BYU football: Scouting new WR commit Gunner Romney
BYU football added an extremely talented wide receiver over the weekend. Here’s what Gunner Romney will bring to Provo.
BYU football picked up a big-time wide out, nabbing Gunner Romney from Arizona.
Romney selected the Cougars over Arizona State, Boise State, Arizona and Utah.
It’s a big get for Kalani Sitake and BYU football. Romney was one of the 166 invitees to Nike’s The Opening camp, and was a standout. Scout.com listed him as one of their biggest surprises, and added that there’s a great chance Romney could be rated a four-star recruit soon.
It isn’t hard to see why. Romney looks to be every bit of a go-to wide receiver.
He’s a really strong route runner, who is quick in and out of his cuts. He isn’t a burner, but he’s got good speed. And most importantly, Romney catches everything that’s thrown his way with his strong (but soft) hands.
As a junior last season, Romney hauled in 70 passes for 1,309 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Looking at his film, it’s clear that Romney understands how to get open. Against man coverage he’ll use his size (6-foot-3, 200-pounds) and strength to get just enough space to secure a catch. Against zone coverage he’s adept at finding the soft spots and camping in them.
Scout ranks Romney as the No. 28 wide receiver in the west and the No. 2 player in the state of Arizona.

Romney has had a number of family members attend BYU – a thing that he told Scout.com added to BYU’s appeal. He’s definitely a player to be excited about. He’s the kind of receiver that BYU fans have been clamoring for since Cody Hoffman departed.
