BYU football: Scouting the Portland State Vikings
By Adam Gibby
Portland State Offense
Playing Style: Balanced attack with quarterback run-option
Returning Starters: 7
Key returning players: WR/QB Josh Kraght, C Chad Bach, LT Randin Crecelius
Key losses: QB Alex Kuresa, RB Nate Tago, RB Paris Penn, TE Cam Sommer
What to expect: Portland State has one of the most dynamic offensive players in the nation, Josh Kraght. Kraght has played quarterback, running back, punt returner and wide receiver. He’ll very likely be the heart of the offense. Expect Kraght to get some time as quarterback even if he does not get the start. The Vikings do not have a running back returning who had more than 250 yards last season, so the first few games may be a bit tough rushing the ball. The big strength that the Vikings have is the offensive line. With four returning OL starters, expect a lot of quarterback draws and run/pass option plays.
How BYU can be successful: If BYU football can contain Josh Kraght and control the line of scrimmage, the Cougars defense should have a good game. The Vikings do not have a lot of offensive options to go to if Josh Kraght is contained. The Vikings will probably have a decent year offensively in their conference because of their dual-threat running quarterback and experienced offensive line, however against the big BYU defensive line, the Vikings may have struggles.
Projection: Josh Kraght will likely have a couple of breakout plays, however, for the most part he will be contained and Portland State will not be able to do very much against the Cougar defense.
