For BYU football fans, the start of fall camp was plenty. For weeks we’ve yearned for football, and it was finally back.

But Cougar Nation got an extra tidbit today, with BYU announcing a future series with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Cougars and Hokies have agreed to a home-and-home two game series. BYU football will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, on Sept. 26, 2026. Va Tech will play the return game on Sept. 14, 2030 in Provo.

In a press release from BYU football, AD Tom Holmoe said this about the Hokies:

“Virginia Tech has consistently been one of the best teams in college football for a very long time. They’re always in the running for the top spot in the ACC because of their high level of talent and great coaching. We’re pleased to be able to schedule this series.”

Last season, Va Tech went 10-4 overall and 6-2 in conference. The Hokies have also made 24-straight bowl games.

Granted, that won’t mean much when the Cougars and Hokies play in 2026 or 2030.

The craziest thing is that there are kids sitting in kindergarten classrooms, who may have never laced up a pair of cleats before, that will be playing in 2030.

Certainly makes me feel old.

In any event, it is really great to see the Cougars scheduling ACC opponents. The more Power 5 teams BYU plays, the better. No one really knows how the conference alignment will look in nine years, but for the Cougars to turn heads, they need to continue to take on the top teams and brands in the nation.

In 2026, Virginia Tech will also play VMI, Old Dominion and Maryland in its out of conference schedule. As it currently stands, the only other known opponent for BYU football in 2026 is Arizona, who will come to Provo on Sept. 12.
