Special Teams

Returning Starters: 2

Key returners: P Josh Gowden, K Cameron Gamble

Key losses: PK Colby Delahoussaye

What to expect in 2017: LSU is very confident in their coverage teams. In 2016, kicker Cameron Gamble placed his kickoffs on average at the one yard line. This caused teams to return kicks on all but 14 occasions during the season.  The punter, Josh Gowden, is good at pinning opponents inside the 10 yard line as he only gave up three touchbacks. The bad side to him is he does not have the distance as some coaches would like, with an average of 41 yards. The projected field goal kicker for the Tigers is Jack Gonsoulin, who only kicked one extra point last year.

How BYU can be successful: BYU football needs to have a big play on special teams. The Cougars are not probably going to have consistent success on returns against the coverage of the Tigers, but one good return could be huge for the Cougars.

Projection: The BYU defense will be consistent against the Tiger offense and will force many punts. Due to great coverage, most punts will lead to fair catches and short returns. However, the Cougars will get one really good return that will open an opportunity to stay competitive with LSU.
