BYU Football: The worst and best case scenarios for the Cougars
By Adam Gibby
Game 11: UNLV
Worst Case Scenario: UNLV has not been a good football team for a very long time. Last season they finished 4-8. The Cougars will enter Las Vegas with a little bit motivation for at least finishing with a winning record. Koy Detmer Jr. will have a decent game and with the return of Corbin Kaufusi, the defense will hold the Running Rebels from scoring much. This will be the best game of the BYU football season
Final Score 28-17 Win (5-6, not ranked)
Best Case Scenario: Tanner Mangum is now in the top three of the projected Heisman race. BYU football fans start to get worried that he may declare for the draft once the season ends. In fact people are so worried about this that they almost forget that BYU has a game. It does not matter though as the Cougars beat the Rebels by 35.
Final Score 49-14 Win (10-1, ranked No. 6)
Game 12: UMASS
Worst Case Scenario: The Cougars come in only one game away from being bowl eligible. UMass plays BYU a lot closer than they did last year, however it is not enough to pull off the upset. BYU wins by 17 and the student section storms the field. The following day, this is seen on Sportscenter’s Not Top Ten plays as the number one spot. Good job students, you topped last year’s Mississippi State embarrassment.
Final Score 31-14 Win (6-6, not ranked)
Best Case Scenario: The stadium is packed. Similar to the Jimmer Days when the Marriott Center would be packed against the worst Mountain West teams, fans just want to see Mangum play. Again Mangum only has to play a quarter and a half before he is given a standing ovation for a great season. Beau Hoge breaks the NCAA record for most rushing yards by a backup quarterback in a game and at half time there is a ceremony honoring Lavell Edwards. The student section cheers for UMass when they score late in the fourth quarter. They don’t storm the field.
Final Score 45-7 Win (11-1, ranked No. 6)
