BYU football: The good, the meh and the ugly
By Shaun Gordon
The Ugly
The season starts off in style. A blowout win against Portland State doesn’t help much in Houston, as the Tigers prove to be the far superior team in a dominating win. To make matters worse, Fred Warner ruptures his Achilles Tendon and is out for the rest of the year.
The Cougars rally well against Utah, but the curse continues as the referees eject the other Warner brother, Troy, on the first defensive play of the game. The Warner-less defense can’t hold on against the Utes.
The horrible luck continues against Wisconsin, as Tejan Koroma goes down for the season as well, and Wisconsin wins easily.
Win number two finally comes in Logan, but loss number four comes a week later as the Broncos walk into Provo and escape with a win.
The early season nightmare continues in Starkville, as the Bulldogs send the depleted Cougars home with their tails between their legs..
Blessed relief finally comes against ECU, as BYU picks up win number three. Loss number six follows at home, as San Jose State stuns the Cougars on their own home turf.
Three straight wins evens the record at 6-6, making the Hawaii game a must-win to secure bowl eligibility.
It doesn’t happen.
The Warriors knock off the Cougars, leaving BYU football on the outside looking in, hoping for a bowl exception.
Fortunately, the usual lack of qualified teams lets the Cougars keep their bowl streak intact.
