BYU football only had one player drafted in the 2017 NFL draft. However there are currently four former Cougars who were not drafted but have a good chance to make a NFL roster.

Every year during the NFL draft, fans everywhere hope to hear their favorite player called. BYU football fans are no different.

Most of the time if a player is not drafted they will not play in the NFL. In fact, almost 10 percent of players drafted don’t even make the team. In 2016, 22 players who were drafted ended up not making the 53 player roster for their teams.

Often times, when a player is not drafted, they will sign with teams as an undrafted free agent. Most of the time, these free agents do not make the team.

Every season, there seems to be many BYU football players who sign as undrafted free agents. Most of the time, they do not end up making the team and end up either playing on a practice team or in a different league. That could all change in 2017 however. Currently, there are four former Cougars who were not drafted that are making a strong case to make the final roster for their teams. They are Harvey Langi, Kai Nacua, Taysom Hill and Michael Davis.

Harvey Langi

What happened since Draft Day:

Harvey Langi was projected by many to get drafted in a late round around the same area as former teammate Jamaal Williams . He was not drafted however by any team. Almost immediately after the draft, Langi signed as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. Since joining the team, Langi has received a lot of praise from coaches and players about his speed and size. He has practiced mostly with the first team this off season. This has led many to think that he is only an injury or trade away from being put into a starting position.

Why he will make the team:

Langi is the highest paid undrafted free agent in the NFL. He also showed a lot of promise against the Jaguars in the first game of the season where he had four tackles and assisted in many other plays. In his second preseason game, Langi led the Patriots with four tackles again. There is very little reason to believe that Langi will not end up making the final roster for the Patriots.
