BYU Cougars: Top 15 fall sports games
By Adam Gibby
Number 6: BYU vs Boise State – Football Oct. 6
Why it is ranked as high as it is: This game is becoming a very good rivalry game between two very respected football programs. The last few years, the game seems to be have been very even with the winning team being able to pull away in the final few minutes. If BYU somehow makes it out of the first five games with zero or one loss, this game could be a huge statement game in showing the nation why the Cougars deserve to be in a BCS game.
Why it is not ranked higher: At this point of the season there is a real possibility that the BYU football season will be determined already. If they have two losses, this game has very little importance. Also, this is a late Friday game which makes it a little bit more inconvenient for many fans.
Number 5: BYU vs San Diego – Women’s Volleyball Sept. 30
Why it is ranked as high as it is: Last season, San Diego was only one game behind the Cougars in the final standings for the WCC conference championship. Similar to soccer, it is very difficult to make the NCAA tournament without being in a Power Five conference. If BYU is able to win this game, not only will they gain an advantage over the Torreros, but they will also gain the tie breaker if the two teams ended up in a tie for first place.
Why it is ranked as low as it is: As important as this game in setting up the rest of the season for the women’s volleyball team, the other four games mean even more to their programs. Also, with this game happening during a time when football is in full swing, sometimes volleyball and other sports can be overlooked a bit. Also, San Diego is not supposed to be as good as they were last year, so even a loss could end up not affecting the standings in the WCC.
