Can BYU football beat LSU? Ask the 1990 Miami Hurricanes
By Ron Jensen
BYU football takes on LSU in the Superdome this weekend. Can the Cougars pull off the upset? It wouldn’t be the first time.
It is evident that some BYU football fans have lost hope of beating LSU this Saturday. This is a result of a sub-par performance against an inferior FCS team, which ended as a 20-6 victory for the Cougars.
The game was disheartening to say the least, but before you give away your season tickets, you may want to hear this.
Everyone remembers back in 1990, when No. 1 ranked Miami came to Provo. Ty Detmer and his teammates pulled off what might be the greatest win in BYU football history.
What people don’t remember, is the game against UTEP the week before. It was supposed to be a good warm-up game, before the huge contest happened a week later.
Unfortunately, BYU football didn’t start off the game well. They trailed 10-7 in the second quarter to a team that would finish the season with a record of 3-8.
To make things worse, once BYU took control of the game and made the score 30 to 10, Earl Kauffman missed the extra point. Thousands of hearts sank, as the thought of Miami loomed in their minds.
Next: Three Things To Know For LSU
Many felt that there was absolutely no way that the Cougars could beat the Hurricanes. Miami did not play a game that first weekend (just like LSU this year).
A week later, gameday arrived. Something happened that sunny fall evening. Many of the same mistakes that the Cougars were making a week earlier, were being made by the Canes on this day.
The BYU coaches and players had resolved many of the errors they had committed previously. They were a different team. A better team.
What started off as a hopeless afternoon, was sparked by a glimmer of hope. That hope evolved into belief, which eventually became the reality of one of the greatest Cougar fan memories, ever.
Now I’m not saying just because BYU beat Miami in 1990, that they will beat LSU in 2017. What I am saying, is just because they played poorly against a weaker opponent, doesn’t mean they can’t.
Fresh courage take, Cougar fans. BYU football has a chance.
