No. 2: The Cougar defense can hang with good teams

I caught some flack on Twitter for saying this, but I think it’s true. Sure, LSU converted on some third-and-longs. Sure, Derrius Guice found running lanes and broke tackles.

But guess what? That’s exactly what should’ve happened. Guice is a Heisman contender and was the best player on the field on Saturday night. He was supposed to do great things.

Still, the Cougar defense played great in the red zone, forcing two field goal attempts and stuffing a fourth-and-goal attempt.

Trailing 14-0 at half time felt like trailing 140-0, but that’s not on the defense. Considering how long they were on the field, I’m surprised they played as well as they did.

LSU had the ball for more than 40 minutes on the night.

The Cougars were gassed, but still played well. This is a talented unit. The only thing they have to work on is getting off the field on third-and-long.
