No. 3: BYU isn’t a big dog yet

BYU football wants to be considered among the best in college football. The Cougars want to be an expansion candidate. They want to hang with the biggest and toughest in the nation.

Unfortunately, they aren’t there yet. And it isn’t particularly close.

BYU struggled all night with the size and speed of Tigers. There’s clearly a difference between a good BYU team and a top-end SEC opponent.

The Cougars can’t rest on reputation. They’ll need to make headlines, upset opponents and create opportunities for themselves. Unfortunately, it’s pretty clear BYU football is a few seasons away from doing those things.

Again, one game isn’t the end all, be all for the Cougars. No one expected them to win this game – I didn’t expect them to win this game.

But I didn’t expect it to give me flashbacks of the 2015 Michigan game.

The Cougars still have time to figure it out. A win against Utah would dissolve all memories of this game. However, at this point, I don’t know how confident the Cougars (or fans) can be about knocking off the Utes.

Still, if BYU can get just two wins out of Utah, Wisconsin, Boise State and Mississippi State, a 10-win regular season is still a possibility. So you can’t really complain.

It will be interesting to see how things play out next week. Breaking the Holy War curse would give the 2017 season an entirely new feel.
