BYU football: Kai Nacua waived by Cleveland Browns
Former BYU football safety Kai Nacua made the Cleveland Browns’ 53-man roster on Saturday. By Sunday, things were different.
They say the NFL doesn’t always stand for “National Football League.” Sometimes, it stands for “Not For Long.” BYU football’s Kai Nacua found that out the hard way.
Just one day after surviving the cuts to make Cleveland’s 53-man roster, Nacua was cut by the Browns.
He had been a trendy pick to make the team, especially with the lack of depth in the Cleveland secondary.
Nacua had played well throughout the preseason, so there’s a chance that he lands on Cleveland’s practice squad (or another team for that matter).
One team that comes to mind is Philadelphia. The Eagles’ secondary could use some youth (their youngest safety is 25-year-old Jaylen Watkins) and it would give Nacua an opportunity to further develop.
Regardless, it’s an incredibly tough break for Nacua.

Nacua signed with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent after leaving BYU football. He was a dynamic safety for the Cougars, collecting 14 interceptions – many of which came in the biggest moment of the game.
Now, there are just seven former BYU football players on NFL 53-man rosters.
Linebackers Harvey Langi and Kyle Van Noy remain with the New England Patriots. Long snapper John Denney remains with the Miami Dolphins. Bronson Kaufusi remains with the Baltimore Ravens. Daniel Sorensen remains with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jamaal Williams remains with the Green Bay Packers and Ziggy Ansah remains with the Detroit Lions.
Taysom Hill was cut by the Packers yesterday, but was claimed by New Orleans. Michael Davis was signed to the Chargers’ practice squad. Here’s hoping Nacua finds work soon.
