No. 10: 1972 – BYU 16, Utah 7

In LaVell Edwards’ first season as BYU football head coach, the Cougars entered the Holy War with a 5-4 record. The Utes had won four in a row over BYU heading into ’72, continuing their dominance of the series.

LaVell leaned on legendary Cougar back Peter Van Valkenburg, who rushed for 158 yards, nearly outgaining the Utah offense by himself.

The BYU defense forced seven turnovers, as the Cougars outlasted the Utes 16-7.

The win started the LaVell Edwards era off on the right foot, and also ushered in the most dominant era for BYU in the Holy War.
