Three things BYU football needs to fix to beat Utah
By Ron Jensen
BYU football hosts Utah this weekend. While many are sour on the Cougars after last week, a win is still possible. They just need to fix these three things.
The LSU game has come and gone for BYU football. As bad as it was, it must be learned from and left behind.
Win the game against Utah this week, and all is forgiven and forgotten. If BYU football is to beat the Utes for the first time since 2009, they’ll have to play better.
Here are three changes that BYU football needs to make to have a chance.
Time of possession
Some fault the defense here. Giving up 479 yards and 27 points is not acceptable, but an important element has to be acknowledged.
It doesn’t matter how good the defense is, if you’re on the field for 70 percent of the game, it’s not going to end well.
In this situation, a defense struggles against a decent FBS team, much less, a SEC powerhouse. The task of beating a team with the ball that long is insurmountable.
The defense actually had some nice stops. They probably would have only given up 20 points, if it wasn’t for the ill-advised fake punt in the fourth quarter.
Some other adjustments might need to made by the defense, but the biggest one, is getting off the field more. Part of this responsibility lies on them, but most of it goes to the offense.
Sustained offensive drives will solve this. Solutions to the next two problems make these happen.
