No. 2: More Micah Simon, Akile Davis and Jonah Trinnaman

BYU football has some talented wide receivers. They’re still learning and growing, but there is talent.

I just think that they’ve been on the bench far too often.

Talon Shumway is, statistically speaking, BYU’s best receiver. He’s  caught eight passes for 101 yards. The Cougars seem to like Shumway’s size – they often try to hit him on slant routes, where he can use his frame to box out defenders.

I think Shumway is a fine player, but I want more Micah Simon.

Simon has just three catches on the season – but all three came on third down and all three moved the chains. He looks natural as a receiver – he often adjusts his routes on the fly to find the soft spot or create separation.

After making some plays against LSU, I was shocked to see he wasn’t getting snaps against Utah.

I wasn’t the only one, either.

I also think that Akile Davis needs more run. I’ve been high on Davis since spring ball, but it’s pretty clear that the Cougars need receivers that can create separation – I think Davis can do that. Even if he gets run and fails, have the Cougars lost anything?

Finally, Jonah Trinnaman needs more plays designed for him. We got to see his 4.3-speed against Utah during his 45-yard kickoff return. I’d like to see more quick screens, tunnel screens and flares thrown his way, so he can use his elite speed to get make guys miss.
